Stephen Serwatka, '96
Stephen Serwatka, '96 has been in love with the game of basketball his whole life. Stepping foot into Salesian in 1992, Stephen probably wasn't aware that he was about to set the pace for Salesian hoops athletes for decades to come. Coached by Montgomery Delaney in his freshman year and Jerry Power his last three years, Stephen was part of the City Champion 1995-1996 team. He ended his four years at Salesian with the most points for a single player in school history: 1,648. Good luck to all of our young men chasing that total. There's no questioning whether or not Serwatka is one of the best basketball players to come out of Westchester County.
After Salesian High School, Stephen went on to play with a scholarship at Clarion University where in 2 years he amassed over 1,000 points. While at Clarion he was in the top 10 in scoring in the country and is currently third all-time at Clarion in scoring average (18.9 ppg).
He has played on many teams and in numerous leagues, one team being R2K. At HITS (Hoops in the Sun) Serwatka made his name known, setting a record as the first person to score 50 points in a HITS Spring League game (which he did in back to back games). He was featured in the New York Post when he sunk 17 three-pointers and a total of 60 points in one game with R2K. His prowess in the league spurred a HITS announcer to refer to Serwatka as an action figure.
Stephen has continued to play the sport he loves, playing up to 4 days a week right now, and was recently inducted into the Hoops in the Sun Hall of Fame. Stephen and his wife, Gloriana, have two children, Grace and Christopher and they reside in Mamaroneck.
